Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need, before you book.

The questions we get before every tour. Answered straight, so you can decide quickly.

Booking & Pricing
What's included in the tour price?

Your guide, private vehicle, park entry fees for every park on your itinerary, bottled water, and light snacks. Gratuity is welcome but never built in.

Lunch is not included on longer tours, but your guide will recommend options. Quick Moab staples for fast days, or a sit-down spot with a view if you have time.

Can I customize my tour?

Absolutely. That's the whole idea. Pick "Custom Combo" on the booking page, or drop us a note with what you want to see, and we'll build the route around you. Photography focus, family-friendly pacing, specific hikes, rock art, dinosaur tracks. Just tell us.

What's the cancellation policy?

Full refund up to 7 days before your tour. 50% refund 3–7 days out. Inside 72 hours we don't typically refund, but we'll always try to reschedule you if life gets in the way.

Weather-related cancellations from our side (unsafe conditions, park closures) = full refund or free reschedule, no question.

Do you tip the guide?

Tips are welcome, never expected. If your guide made your day, 15–20% is customary. But there's zero pressure, zero awkwardness, and zero built-in gratuity line on the checkout.

On the Day
How many people fit in one tour?

Our standard vehicle seats up to 6 guests comfortably. For groups of 7 or more, we book multiple vehicles or a larger van. Just contact us and we'll quote it.

Is the tour private, or will we share with strangers?

Every Sand & Stars tour is private. It's your group and your guide, always. We never mix parties. That's the whole point of what we do.

Where do pickups happen?

We pick up at your Moab lodging (most hotels, Airbnbs, and campgrounds) or at a shared meetup point in town if you're staying outside the city. Pickup details are confirmed with you after booking.

What should I wear and bring?

Closed-toe shoes or hiking shoes, layers (desert mornings are cold, afternoons hot), sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a small daypack for personal stuff.

We provide extra water, snacks, and a cooler. Camera gear fits easily in the vehicle. No need to pack light.

Weather, Safety & Kids
What happens if the weather is bad?

Desert weather almost never cancels a tour. Rain clears fast, overcast light is actually great for photography, and temperatures swing more than the clouds do.

If conditions make a specific route unsafe (flash flood risk in a canyon, snow at elevation in Canyonlands), we'll reroute to a safer area or, in the rare case neither works, reschedule with a full refund.

Are tours family-friendly?

Yes. We tour with families regularly and adjust routes, hike lengths, and pacing for kids of every age. Car seats available on request. Just tell us ages when you book and we'll make sure everyone's comfortable.

What about accessibility?

Most of our overlook-based tours (Highlights, Dead Horse Point, Canyonlands) are accessible without hiking. If you or anyone in your party has mobility needs, reach out first. We'll build a route that works and be honest about any stops that won't.

Still have questions?

We'd rather talk to you before you book than after. Email, call, or drop a quick note. We reply fast.
